Fear not. I got it to work. I have successfully connected my Galaxy S6 Edge to the MS Wireless Display Adapter, and my TV is a Sony, and not a smart TV but it did have a USB and an available HDMI input. Don't bother calling MS or SS. They will just tell you to call the other guy. This should work for a Galaxy S5 as well.
First you need to access your MS Wireless Display Adapter settings using the MS Wireless Display Adapter App. You need to get to the Adapter settings and to do this you need to have a device like a tablet or computer that you can access the App from the Microsoft Store. I used a Surface Pro 2. In the windows store, download the MS Wireless Display Adapter App and install. Connect your tablet to the TV using the MS Wireless Display Adapter (I had no problem connecting my surface pro 2 to the TV via the MS WDA). Once you see your tablet displayed on the TV, launch the MS Wireless Display Adapter App from your tablet to access the Adapter settings. Go to the UPDATE and click on update even if it says it is already up to date. You're looking for the 5/26/2015 release of version 1.3.8220. This is really stupid, but you have to download the update and then after it is downloaded you have to click the UPDATE button to get the Wireless Display Adapter to update. If successful, your TV screen will show that the adapter is updating and it will take 30 seconds or so. While updating, it will disconnect you from your tablet or computer. You then need to re-connect your tablet to the TV and launch the APP and check that you have the new file. You can click the update button again just to verify that you were updated properly and that there are no more updates.
Now close the app and disconnect the tablet from the TV. Go to your phone and go through the connection process that previously did not work. Ta-da! It worked for me straight-away. I closed it down and tried it several times. I displayed photos, played a short video and messed with the phone, all with no problems. The only hiccup was that when videos are played, the videos only display on the TV. You can still fast forward and adjust the sound, but no video on the phone, just on the TV. Otherwise, everything else displays on the TV and the phone at the same time. If you don't like the way the display is showing on your TV, you have to get back to the Adapter settings and work on the picture size versus the TV's size. Go figure.
Good luck to us all.
